Knee surgery in Halifax and Elland with Mr Osman Riaz
Mr Osman Riaz is a consultant orthopaedic knee surgeon who runs clinics and operating lists at Spire Elland Hospital, Elland Lane, HX5 9EB, ten minutes from Halifax town centre. He also leads the NHS sports knee service that covers Calderdale Royal Hospital, so for most people in Halifax, Brighouse and the Calder Valley he is the knee surgeon they would end up with either way. Ligament injuries
ACL reconstruction in Halifax
Rugby league, football, mountain biking on the Calder Valley trails, fell running: Halifax keeps its knee surgeons busy, and the ACL is the injury that ends seasons. Mr Riaz performs around 120 ACL reconstructions and 30 revisions a year, more than any other surgeon in Yorkshire, and holds the FIFA Diploma in Football Medicine. He decides graft choice and whether to add a lateral tenodesis case by case, from experience rather than habit.
At Spire Elland the MRI is on site, so a first appointment, the scan and the plan can all happen within days. Surgery is usually a day case. You go home with a criteria-based rehabilitation protocol that any good physiotherapist in Halifax, Brighouse or Sowerby Bridge can follow, and Mr Riaz reviews you at each stage.

Knee replacement in Halifax
When the cartilage has gone and injections, physiotherapy and weight loss have stopped working, a knee replacement is the operation that gives people their life back. Mr Riaz performs around 80 a year and offers VELYS robotic-assisted knee replacement for suitable patients, using live measurements in theatre to balance the ligaments and set the implant to the plan.
He is also one of the few surgeons in the region doing joint-preserving knee osteotomy in volume, around 40 a year. If you are in your forties or fifties with arthritis on one side of the knee, realigning the leg may buy you a decade or more with your own joint, and he will say so if that is the better option.
Not sure what is wrong?
Knee pain in Halifax: when it is time to see a specialist
Plenty of knee pain settles with a few weeks of sensible rest and physiotherapy. These are the situations where waiting tends to make things worse, and a consultation is worth having:
- A pop or a giving-way during sport, with swelling the same day. Treat that as a ligament or meniscal injury until a scan says otherwise.
- A knee that locks, catches or will not straighten fully. Meniscal tears repair best when they are repaired early.
- A kneecap that has dislocated, or threatens to.
- Months of pain on stairs, at night or after sitting, with stiffness in the morning. That is the arthritis pattern, and there is more on offer than painkillers and a replacement.
- Previous knee surgery that did not deliver.
The first appointment is an examination, a look at any scans you have, and an X-ray or MRI at Spire Elland if one is needed. You leave with a diagnosis in plain English and a plan, which is as likely to be physiotherapy or an injection as an operation.
