How it works

Private ACL surgery in four steps

From first phone call to walking out of theatre is usually a matter of weeks, not months. Here is what actually happens.

1

Book a consultation

Call Huddersfield Private Hospital (01484 533131) or Spire Elland (01422 702951). Self-paying patients do not need a GP referral. A consultation with Mr Riaz is £250 at either hospital.

2

Examination and MRI

Mr Riaz examines the knee and reviews your MRI. If you have not had one, it can be arranged on site, usually within days. You leave knowing whether you need surgery at all, and if so, which graft he recommends and why.

3

Written quote and a date

The hospital sends a fixed-price quotation in writing that covers the operation, the anaesthetist, the implants and your aftercare. Hospital finance plans are available if you would rather spread the cost. You then choose a date that suits you.

4

Surgery and rehab

Keyhole ACL reconstruction as a day case in most cases. You go home with a clear, criteria-based rehabilitation protocol your physiotherapist can follow, and Mr Riaz sees you at each milestone.

Why go private

What private ACL surgery gets you that the waiting list does not

  • Time. An unstable knee that waits months for surgery picks up meniscal tears and cartilage damage along the way, and every month off sport costs fitness and confidence. Privately, the whole process runs in weeks.
  • The right graft, not the default graft. Hamstring, quadriceps tendon, patellar tendon, rectus femoris or a synthetic ligament: Mr Riaz matches the graft to your sport, your age and your knee, and explains the trade-offs honestly.
  • A lateral tenodesis when it earns its place. Adding a lateral extra-articular tenodesis cuts re-rupture risk substantially in young, pivoting athletes. He performs around 60 a year and will tell you plainly whether you need one.
  • One surgeon, start to finish. The person who assessed you operates on you and sees you at every follow-up. If something is not right, you are seen quickly, not re-referred.
  • Experience with the difficult ones. Around 30 revision ACL reconstructions a year, including slope-correcting osteotomy. The surgeon fixing failed grafts from elsewhere is a reasonable choice for your first one.

The money

What a private ACL quote includes

Private ACL reconstruction in the UK typically costs between £6,000 and £10,000 as a fixed-price package. Before you compare numbers, check what is inside them.

Usually included

  • Surgeon and anaesthetist fees
  • Theatre, implants and the graft fixation devices
  • Your stay, including an overnight bed if you need one
  • Post-operative follow-up appointments with Mr Riaz
  • Aftercare for a set period if anything needs attention

Usually separate

  • The initial consultation (£250)
  • MRI or other imaging before surgery
  • Physiotherapy after the first few sessions
  • A brace, if one is recommended
  • Any additional procedure found at the time of surgery, such as a meniscal repair, unless it is written into the quote

Paying for it

Both hospitals offer fixed-price self-pay packages and finance plans that spread the cost over monthly payments. If you have private medical insurance, Mr Riaz is recognised by the major insurers; your insurer will usually ask for a GP referral and will pre-authorise the treatment.

Common questions

Private ACL surgery: your questions answered

Do I need a GP referral for private ACL surgery?

Not if you are paying for yourself. Call the hospital and book directly. If you are using private medical insurance, most insurers want a GP referral and will pre-authorise the consultation and the operation, so check with them first.

How quickly can I be seen and operated on?

Consultations are usually available within days. Once you have had your MRI and decided to go ahead, surgery is typically booked within a few weeks, around your work and the hospital’s theatre lists. Compare that with NHS waits for ACL reconstruction, which commonly run to several months.

How much does private ACL surgery cost?

Fixed-price packages in the UK typically run from £6,000 to £10,000, depending on the hospital, the graft and whether anything else needs doing at the same time. Mr Riaz’s consultation is £250. Your hospital gives you a written quote before anything is booked. The ACL cost guide explains what moves the price.

Which graft will I have?

That is decided with you at the consultation. Hamstring, quadriceps tendon, patellar tendon, rectus femoris and synthetic options each have strengths and trade-offs that depend on your sport, your age and your knee. Read the graft choice guide before you come, and bring your questions.

Will I stay in hospital overnight?

Most ACL reconstructions are day cases: you arrive in the morning and go home the same evening on crutches. If you live a long way away, have a combined procedure or simply prefer a night in, that can be arranged and is usually written into the package.

When can I drive, work and play sport again?

As a rough guide: desk work within one to two weeks, driving once you are off crutches and can brake hard (usually two to four weeks, longer for a right knee), running from around three to four months if your rehab milestones are met, and a return to pivoting sport at nine to twelve months. The criteria-based protocol sets the targets; your knee, not the calendar, decides when you move on.
