What he treats

Knee surgery in Huddersfield: what Mr Riaz does

A knee-only surgeon. Everything on this list is something he does every week, not occasionally.

Sports knee injuries

Meniscus and cartilage

  • Keyhole meniscal repair, and meniscectomy only when repair is not possible
  • Meniscal transplant, the first performed in Huddersfield and Halifax
  • Cartilage repair, including AutoCart, the first in Yorkshire
  • Knee arthroscopy for loose bodies, mechanical symptoms and diagnosis

Arthritis and alignment

  • Knee osteotomy to realign a bow-legged or knock-kneed joint and keep your own knee
  • Total knee replacement, including VELYS robotic-assisted knee replacement
  • Injections and non-surgical management when surgery is not the right answer
  • Second opinions on a knee that has not recovered after previous surgery

Ligament injuries

ACL reconstruction in Huddersfield

Huddersfield is a town of footballers, rugby league players, climbers and fell runners, and the anterior cruciate ligament is the injury that stops them. Mr Riaz performs around 120 ACL reconstructions and 30 revision ACL reconstructions a year, more than any other surgeon in Yorkshire, and holds the FIFA Diploma in Football Medicine. That volume matters: graft choice, tunnel placement and the decision about adding a lateral tenodesis are made from experience, not from a textbook.

Your first appointment covers the examination, a review of your MRI (or arranging one locally if you have not had it yet), and an honest conversation about whether you need surgery at all. If you do, you will leave knowing which graft is recommended and why, what the operation involves, and what the rehabilitation protocol looks like week by week. Surgery is usually a day case, and the physiotherapy that follows can be done close to home.

Arthritis

Knee replacement in Huddersfield

When arthritis has worn through the cartilage and injections, physiotherapy and weight loss have stopped helping, a knee replacement gives most people a knee they stop thinking about. Mr Riaz performs around 80 knee replacements a year and offers VELYS robotic-assisted knee replacement for suitable patients, which uses live measurements during the operation to balance the ligaments and position the implant to the plan.

Because he is also an osteotomy and joint-preservation surgeon, younger and more active patients are not pushed towards a replacement by default. If realigning the leg with a knee osteotomy would keep your own joint going for another decade, he will say so, and he will say so just as plainly if it would not.

Not sure what is wrong?

Knee pain in Huddersfield: when to see a knee surgeon

Most knee pain settles with rest, ice and a few weeks of good physiotherapy. Some does not, and a few patterns are worth having looked at properly rather than waiting on. Book a consultation if you recognise any of these:

  • Your knee gave way or you heard a pop during sport, and it swelled within a few hours. That is a ligament or meniscal injury until proven otherwise.
  • The knee locks, catches or will not fully straighten. A torn meniscus or a loose piece of cartilage is often the cause, and repair is more successful when it is done early.
  • Your kneecap has dislocated, or feels as though it might.
  • Pain on stairs, at night or after sitting that has gone on for months, with morning stiffness. That pattern points towards arthritis, and there is a lot that can be done before anyone mentions a replacement.
  • You have already had knee surgery elsewhere and it has not delivered what you were promised.

At your appointment Mr Riaz examines the knee, looks at any scans you already have and arranges an X-ray or MRI if needed. You get a diagnosis in plain English and a plan, which is just as likely to be physiotherapy or an injection as it is an operation.

Not every painful knee needs replacing: a double-level osteotomy realigns the leg and keeps the patient’s own joint.
