What is VELYS robotic knee replacement?

VELYS robotic knee replacement is a total knee replacement carried out with the assistance of the VELYS robotic system. It is an imageless system, so it does not require a pre-operative CT scan. During the operation it uses an infrared camera and optical trackers to build a detailed, real-time picture of your knee’s anatomy and movement, helping the surgeon plan and perform the procedure with precision.

The surgeon remains in full control throughout — the robot guides accuracy, it does not replace the surgeon’s judgement.

How does the VELYS robot work?

Once your knee is exposed, the system gathers live data on your bone surfaces, alignment and the tension in your ligaments as the knee is moved through its range. Mr Riaz uses this information to fine-tune the position of your implant and to balance the soft tissues around the knee.

Because no CT scan is needed, there is no additional radiation and less preparation before surgery — and your knee replacement is planned and placed to match your own anatomy rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Benefits of robotic-assisted knee replacement

Precision alignment

Real-time data helps position the implant accurately and consistently.

Personalised to you

The plan is tailored to your unique anatomy and ligament balance.

Soft-tissue protection

Precise cuts and balancing can mean less disruption to surrounding tissues.

No CT scan required

The imageless system avoids extra radiation and pre-operative scanning.

Potentially smoother recovery

Many patients report less discomfort early on, though recovery always varies.

Surgeon-controlled

An experienced knee surgeon stays in charge, supported by the robot’s accuracy.

Am I suitable for robotic knee replacement?

Robotic knee replacement is an option for people with knee arthritis whose symptoms are no longer controlled by non-surgical measures such as physiotherapy, injections or medication. Not everyone needs a full replacement — where appropriate, Mr Riaz will first discuss joint-preserving options such as osteotomy or a partial knee replacement. The right choice is always made together with you after a full assessment.

Serving Yorkshire & Greater Manchester

Mr Riaz sees and operates on patients from across the region, including Huddersfield, Halifax, Elland, Dewsbury, Batley, Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, Barnsley, Oldham, Rochdale, Manchester and the wider Greater Manchester area. If you are considering robotic knee replacement, expert care is within easy reach.

Frequently asked questions

What is the VELYS robot used for in knee replacement?

The VELYS robotic system assists the surgeon during total knee replacement by providing real-time data on your knee’s anatomy and ligament balance, helping to position the new implant with precision. It is imageless, so no CT scan is needed.

Is robotic knee replacement better than traditional knee replacement?

Robotic assistance can improve the accuracy and consistency of implant positioning and soft-tissue balancing. Many patients report a comfortable early recovery, though outcomes vary and a well-performed traditional replacement also has excellent results.

Does VELYS robotic knee replacement need a CT scan?

No. VELYS is an imageless system that uses an infrared camera and optical trackers during surgery, so a pre-operative CT scan is not required. This avoids additional radiation and reduces preparation time.

Where can I have robotic knee replacement with Mr Osman Riaz?
